Decorations etched into the Great Wall go back for centuries, including carvings of clouds and lotus blossoms supposedly created by the wives of soldiers constructing the wall under the direction of General Qi Jiguang of the Ming dynasty. But in modern times, graffiti has become a nuisance rather than an expression of art. In 2016, NBA player Bobby Brown of the Houston Rockets came under fire for carving his name into the Great Wall, but plenty of more anonymous tourists have left their marks as well. The problem has become so widespread, Chinese officials have considered setting up a special graffiti section at one of the fighting towers at the Mutianyu section of the wall (about 40 miles north of Beijing), where visitors will be allowed to carve their immortal words.

NEW YORK - A 30-second video welcoming Vice-President Xi Jinping was shown on the giant LED screen overlooking New York's Times Square on Tuesday, the day he met with US President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden.

A promotional video on China was shown in Times Square before President Hu Jintao's visit to the US in January 2011. The 60-second video - featuring basketball superstar Yao Ming and astronaut Yang Liwei, among other celebrities - was shown 300 times daily for a month.

There are many modern misconceptions concerning the Great Wall of China. The best known and most often repeated is that it is the only human-made structure on earth that can be seen from space; this is not true. The origin of this claim is the English essayist Sir Henry Norman, who wrote in 1895 CE that the wall was "the only work of human hands on the globe visible from the moon." His observation was based on the fact that people on earth could see craters and canals on the moon, and so someone on the moon would be able to see something as long and massive as the Great Wall on earth. Many people seem to believe that the claim the wall can be seen from the moon is based on first-hand accounts of astronauts or the work of scientists and astronomers, but it is actually the creation of a man who wrote when space travel was not even possible. Modern day scholars and scientists, as well as those who have traveled to the moon, have debunked this claim repeatedly.

The Yongle (pronounced "Yong luh") Emperor of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) first commissioned the historic compilation in 1403. His directive was broad and unprecedented: to identify ancient and significant Chinese writings in a wide range of fields including astronomy, geography, medicine, religion, technology, and art. These accumulated texts were then transcribed by hand and consisted of 22,877 sections in 11,095 volumes.

When Neil Armstrong, the first American astronaut to land on the moon, looked back at the huge, glistening earth, he could identify only two manmade works: the dikes of Holland and the Great Wall of China.

A major shortcoming of gene expression profiling studies on neuroendocrine lung tumors is the absence of a proper reference tissue because pulmonary neuroendocrine cells are only scarcely present in the lung. Therefore, normal adjacent lung tissue is used as a reference.
