Download the DMG file

Explore the interface and the tools of Tux Paint




The first thing you need to do is to familiarize yourself with the interface and the tools of Tux Paint. The interface is designed to be simple and intuitive for children and adults alike. It consists of three main parts: the canvas, the toolbar, and the selector.


The canvas, the toolbar, and the selector




The canvas is where you draw your pictures. It is a large white area that fills most of the screen. You can draw on it using different tools that we will explain later.


The toolbar is located at the bottom of the screen. It contains icons that represent different tools that you can use to draw on the canvas. You can click on an icon to select a tool and see its options in the selector.


The selector is located at the left or right side of the screen, depending on your settings. It shows different options for each tool that you select from the toolbar. For example, if you select the paint brush tool, you will see different sizes and shapes of brushes in the selector. You can click on an option to choose it and use it on the canvas.


The paint brush, the stamp, the line, the shape, and the text tools




These are some of the most basic and common tools that you can use to draw on the canvas. They are located at the left side of the toolbar, and they allow you to draw freehand, add stamps, draw lines, draw shapes, and add text to your pictures. Here is how they work:


The paint brush tool




This tool allows you to draw freehand on the canvas, using different colors, sizes, and shapes of brushes. You can select the paint brush tool by clicking on the icon that looks like a paint brush. You will see different options for the brush size and shape in the selector. You can choose from small, medium, large, huge, and calligraphy brushes, and from round, square, and fuzzy shapes. You can also change the color of the brush by clicking on the color palette at the right side of the toolbar. To draw with the paint brush tool, simply click and drag on the canvas.


The stamp tool




This tool allows you to add stamps to your pictures, using different categories and themes of images. You can select the stamp tool by clicking on the icon that looks like a rubber stamp. You will see different categories of stamps in the selector, such as animals, plants, vehicles, people, food, and more. You can click on a category to see the stamps available for it. You can also change the size and orientation of the stamp by using the sliders at the bottom of the selector. To add a stamp to your picture, simply click on it in the selector and then click on the canvas where you want it to appear.


The line tool




This tool allows you to draw straight lines on the canvas, using different colors and thicknesses. You can select the line tool by clicking on the icon that looks like a diagonal line. You will see different options for the line thickness in the selector. You can choose from thin, medium, thick, and thickest lines. You can also change the color of the line by clicking on the color palette at the right side of the toolbar. To draw a line with this tool, simply click and drag on the canvas.


The shape tool




This tool allows you to draw geometric shapes on the canvas, such as circles, squares, triangles, stars, and more. You can select the shape tool by clicking on the icon that looks like a circle. You will see different options for the shape type in the selector. You can choose from circle, square, triangle, star, heart, and polygon shapes. You can also change the color of the shape by clicking on the color palette at the right side of the toolbar. To draw a shape with this tool, simply click and drag on the canvas. You can also hold the Shift key to make the shape symmetrical, or the Ctrl key to make the shape filled.


The text tool




This tool allows you to add text to your pictures, using different fonts, sizes, and colors. You can select the text tool by clicking on the icon that looks like a letter T. You will see different options for the font type and size in the selector. You can choose from various fonts, such as Arial, Comic Sans, Courier, Times New Roman, and more. You can also change the color of the text by clicking on the color palette at the right side of the toolbar. To add text to your picture, simply click on the canvas where you want it to appear and type your message. You can also use the arrow keys to move the text cursor, or the Backspace key to delete characters.


The fill, the eraser, the undo, and the redo tools




These are some of the tools that you can use to modify your drawings or correct your mistakes. They are located at the right side of the toolbar, and they allow you to fill an area with color or gradient, erase parts of your drawing, undo or redo your actions. Here is how they work:


The fill tool




This tool allows you to fill an area of your drawing with a solid color or a gradient. You can select the fill tool by clicking on the icon that looks like a paint bucket. You will see different options for the fill type in the selector. You can choose from solid color, horizontal gradient, vertical gradient, radial gradient, or rainbow gradient. You can also change the color or colors of the fill by clicking on the color palette at the right side of the toolbar. To fill an area with this tool, simply click on it on the canvas. The area will be filled with the color or gradient that you selected.


The eraser tool




This tool allows you to erase parts of your drawing, using different sizes and shapes of erasers. You can select the eraser tool by clicking on the icon that looks like an eraser. You will see different options for the eraser size and shape in the selector. You can choose from small, medium, large, huge, and calligraphy erasers, and from round, square, and fuzzy shapes. To erase with this tool, simply click and drag on the canvas.


The undo and redo tools




These tools allow you to undo or redo your actions, in case you make a mistake or change your mind. You can select the undo tool by clicking on the icon that looks like a curved arrow pointing to the left. You can select the redo tool by clicking on the icon that looks like a curved arrow pointing to the right. You can also use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y to undo and redo your actions.
