Plot Summary
The Kadam family runs a successful restaurant in Mumbai, India, where the second-oldest son, Hassan, has a talent for cooking. When their restaurant is destroyed by a mob during a political riot, Hassan's mother is killed in the fire. The family flees to Europe, where they settle in London, but find the climate and the location unsuitable for their business.
One day, their van breaks down near Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, a picturesque village in the south of France. They are helped by Marguerite, a young woman who works as a sous-chef at Le Saule Pleureur (The Weeping Willow), a Michelin-starred restaurant owned by Madame Mallory, a stern and snobbish widow. Papa Kadam, the head of the family, decides to buy an abandoned property across the street from Le Saule Pleureur and open an Indian restaurant called Maison Mumbai.
This sparks a rivalry between the two establishments, as Madame Mallory tries to sabotage the Kadams' business and drive them away. She complains about the noise, the smell, and the hygiene of their restaurant, and even buys all the ingredients from the local market to prevent them from cooking. However, he soon feels restless and unfulfilled by his success, as he misses his family and his roots.
He decides to leave France and move to Paris, where he works at a prestigious restaurant called Le Chien Méchant (The Mean Dog). There, he creates innovative dishes that fuse Indian and French flavors, but he also loses his passion and joy for cooking. He becomes depressed and lonely, until he receives a visit from Marguerite, who tells him that his family has opened a new restaurant in Paris called Le Coq au Vin (The Rooster with Wine), with Madame Mallory as their partner.
Hassan realizes that he belongs with his family and Marguerite, and quits his job at Le Chien Méchant. He joins them at Le Coq au Vin, where he resumes his role as the main cook. The film ends with Hassan and Marguerite celebrating their engagement at Maison Mumbai, which has been converted into a banquet hall for special occasions.
